It is very common for people who suffer from cervical problems to have Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD/TMJ). Many times, people seek treatment from neurologists and due to a lack of dental training, the neurologist may not realize that these problems are caused by TMJ. It is very important to understand TMJ Dysfunctions symptoms & treatment so you can see the concerned doctor.

TMJ Symptoms

  • Increased pain when chewing
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Headaches and nausea
  • Lack of coordination and difficulty walking.
  • Abnormal reflexes.
  • Muscle spasms.
  • Inability to fully turn the head or bend the neck, sometimes interfering with driving
  • Tingling, numbness, and/or weakness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet.

Many patients with TMJ have a tendency to clench their jaw, grind their teeth, and cannot relax their jaw at night. Stress can increase pain and we suggest to consult a TMJ specialist dentist immediately to get the right treatment at right time. We treat patients with similar problems on regular basis, recently we treated one patient which I will discuss with all as everyone can relate their symptoms with this case study.

One patient who came with history of pains in the back of head, neck region and radiating to the shoulder and arms. There was other issues :

  • stiffness in the movement of neck
  • moderate to severe headaches,
  • unable to have sound sleep since 10-12 years.

These problems get exaggerated with stress. Lately patient got unconscious 3-4 times during routine

works within a period of 1 month. The problems got relieved a bit with medicines, physiotherapy and yoga, but again she suffered the same problems after stopping these things. Somehow patient got temporary relief of the symptoms but the root cause still persisted.

Patient was under medication from a neurologist since last 15 days for the treatment of some neurological problem. She was somehow came in contact with our team in one the event where she consulted with our team of experts. We asked her to visit our clinic. Patient got consultation at our clinic for TMJ dysfunction.

A special de-programmer was given overnight for the diagnosis and as per our expectations, the patient improved significantly with the symptoms. She didn’t take any medicine at all. The treatment plan was personalized as per the patient’s condition and the patient has shown tremendous improvement.”
